Important Notes Before Travelling

  • • Navigation: Google Maps does not work great here due to restrictions by the Chinese government. An alternative would be Baidu Maps (but it is only in Mandarin), otherwise Apple Maps is workable too.

  • • Getting Around: Public transport in Zhangjiajie can be limited, so it's advisable to hire a local driver or book guided tours to get around the major tourist spots. Taxis are available, but they may not always be easy to find outside of major areas.

  • • Best Time to Visit: During the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild, and the landscapes are at their most picturesque. Summer can be hot and crowded, while winter may be chilly with occasional snow.

  • • What to Pack: Be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes for hiking, especially if you plan to explore the mountainous terrains. Bring light layers in spring and autumn, and heavier clothing if visiting in winter. A rain jacket is always useful, as weather can be unpredictable.
