The Bukhansan National Park (Korean: 북한산국립공원, 北漢山國立公園) in Seoul and Gyeonggi
covers an area of 79.92 km2 (30.86 sq mi) and was established on 2 April 1983.
Bukhansan means "mountains north of the Han River."

The park contains forested areas, temples and granite peaks. The three main
peaks are Baekundae, 836.5 m (2,744 ft), Insubong, 810.5 m (2,659 ft) and
Mangnyeongdae, 799.5 m (2,623 ft). Due to its popularity with hikers and Seoul
residents, some trails are closed on a rotation basis to protect the local
environment.

The Bukhansanseong Fortress is located in the park, together with its 9.5 km
(5.9 mi) long defensive wall. A fortress was first built on this site in 132 AD
to protect Seoul from foreign invasions, and it was expanded to its current size
in 1711. It was reconstructed after damage sustained in the Korean War. Despite
its name, this mountain is in Seoul, South Korea, so this mountain should not be
confused with North Korea (also referred to as 북한, bukhan).


NAME

There is a current movement to have the name of Bukhansan reverted. For many
years up until now, the three main peaks of the park have collectively been
called "Bukhansan"; however, the original collective name of these three peaks
was Samgaksan, meaning "three horned mountains". The Gangbuk-gu District Office
in Seoul is leading a petition to have the central government change the name
back to the original. Civilians, religious leaders, other district offices, and
groups, such as the Korean Mountaineering League, are assisting in the lobbying
to have the name of the three original peaks reverted to Samgaksan.


FEATURES


TRAILS

There are many trails and the most known routes include Baegundae (Hangul: 백운대),
which is Bukhansan's highest peak at 837 meters, the fortress wall, and the
Insu-bong (Hangul: 인수봉) which rises up to 810.5 meters. The 70 kilometer
Dulle-gil Trail (Hangul: 둘레길) connects forested paths along foothills and
villages, 21 sections out of total. Dobongsan (Hangul: 도봉산) is another popular
entry point into the park featuring a trail that starts near Dobongsan Station.
This hiking route features steep climbs using handrails and is a popular rock
climbing area.

Bukhansan National Park

Han Byoungho (born October 7, 1962) is one of the pioneers of the second
generation of picture book artists in Korea. He developed distinctive characters
inspired by dokkaebi (mythological spirits) through his book Dokkaebi and the
Pumpkin Porridge Seller published in 1992 illustrated in the style of
traditional Korean painting. Afterward, Han created a number of picture books
featuring varied dokkaebi characters, earning him the nickname “dokkaebi
artist.” Moreover, based on deep curiosity and keen observations of nature, he
published books about nature awareness such as When You Go to Misan Valley and
The Day When Baby Otter Came, building his reputation as a picture book artist
spotlighting the wonders of nature and ecology. Han also has a particular
interest in antiques and creates diverse works and presents exhibitions on old
items. He was nominated as the Korean candidate for the 2014 Hans Christian
Andersen Award, frequently referred to as the Nobel Prize for children's
literature.  


CAREER

Han Byoung Ho made his debut as a picture book artist in 1992 with Dokkaebi and
the Pumpkin Porridge Seller, depicting Korean mythological spirits, dokkaebi, in
the style of traditional Korean painting. In 1997, he received the Art Prize of
the Sixth Children's Culture Award for his picture book Dokkaebi’s Magic Club,
which was later translated into English, French, Russian, Chinese, and Japanese.
In 2002, he was awarded the Grand Prize at the Biennale of Asian Illustrations
Japan for Cock-a-doodle-doo Is Scary!, and in 2004, he was awarded the Grand
Prize for Korean Creative Illustration for When You Go to Misan Valley. In 2005,
Han became the first Korean to receive a Golden Apple at the Biennial of
Illustration Bratislava (BIB) for I Wish I Were a Bird, which was published in
2004. The book was selected for the IBBY Honour List in 2006. Han was nominated
as the Korean candidate for the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2014. Beginning
with the international exhibition of illustration in 1992, Han has presented his
illustrations in exhibitions in countries including Japan, France, and Italy,
engaging with readers across the world.

The Garden of Morning Calm (Korean: 아침고요수목원) is an arboretum located at the east
of Seoul, in the Gapyeong district of South Korea. On 300,000 m², it houses
5,000 species of plants, some rare or endangered and attracts 600,000 tourists
per year. The name of this garden reminds that Korea is often nicknamed the
"country of the morning calm". There are different festivals in this garden,
especially in winter with a light festival.

Designed in 1996 by professor Han San-kyung of Sahmyook University with the
ambition of spreading the Korean interpretation of beauty, it is an artistic
space based on concepts of asymmetry and balance. It is divided into twenty
sections. The Garden of Plants, for example, is home to about 1,000 species of
flowers from all over Korea. The most popular part is Sukgeun Garden, which
takes the shape of the Korean peninsula, symbolizing the desire for
reunification.

Garden of Morning Calm

Gangchon Rail Park

Minsok village (Korean Folk Village) is a living museum type of tourist
attraction in the city of Yongin, a satellite city in the Seoul Metropolitan
Area in the province of Gyeonggi in South Korea. It was first opened on October
3, 1974 (ground breaking in 1973 and completion in 1974). Korean Folk Village is
a popular tourist destination for both Koreans and foreigners, located near
South Korea's largest amusement park, Everland.

Real houses from across the country were relocated and restored to create a
replica of a village from the late Joseon period. Events such as celebrating
seasonal changes and traditional performances are held in KFV. The village is
set up in a natural environment occupying approximately 245 acres. Over 260
traditional houses reminiscent of the late Joseon Dynasty can be found there.
The purpose of the Korean Folk Village is to display elements of traditional
Korean life and culture. There are multiple sections to the park, including
numerous replicas of traditional houses of the different social classes
(peasant, landowner, yangban) from various regions.


HISTORY

The Korean Folk Village was the first open-air museum constructed in South
Korea. Construction of the Korean Folk Village began as a way to preserve
traditional Korean culture and customs, including traditional Korean
architecture, food, and clothing in response to the rapid westernisation and
industrialisation of Korea during the 1960s. The village's buildings have either
been restored or relocated from other provinces around Korea.


LIVING CULTURE EXPERIENCE

Inside the folk village, staff members dress up in distinctive costumes
depicting several characters from the Joseon Dynasty such as Sato (the
governors), Daejanggeum (a royal of the palace), Kumiho (legendary fox with nine
tails), Geosang (business magnate), etc.

There are typically four cultural performances available to watch: Nong-ak play,
tightrope play, horseback martial art play, and a traditional wedding. These
performances are played at each stage twice a day. Moreover, the folk village
offers other cultural experiences including:

 * Ferry
 * Horseback riding
 * Natural dyeing experience
 * Traditional life experience
 * Family park performance
 * Main performance

The village consists of Joseon period houses and workshops, where visitors can
enjoy the architectural characteristics of the Joseon dynasty and experience
traditional crafts.

Traditional wedding ceremonies are also held here.


LOCATION, ACCESS AND FACILITIES

The village is accessible by subway and bus:

 * Gangnam Station: 5001-1 (10th gate, red bus, fare: 2100 won), 1560.
 * Suwon Station: v10-5, v37, Korean Folk village shuttle bus (using a travel
   bureau at Suwon station).
 * Sanggal Station: 30, 54, 10-5, 37 (Get off for Nagok Village).
 * Miguem Station: 30, (shuttle bus)

There is a free shuttle bus that runs between Korean Folk Village and Suwon
station. Round trip takes about 30 minutes.

There is a ticket fee needed for admission into the Korean Folk Village.


FACILITIES

The facilities in the park cater towards the visitor's needs; entertainment,
service and food. They consist of a traditional street market, restaurants, and
showcases of traditional woodworking and metalworking techniques. Also,
traditional dances, equestrian skills, and marriage ceremonies are performed at
different locations around the park. Several arts and crafts shops with food
produced by local artisans, recreational activities, and an ample selection of
places to eat can be found as well.

The amusement park section has rides and games, an art museum, a sculpture
garden, a Korean Folk Museum, and a World Folk Museum which highlights
traditional lifestyles from around the world.

The village was used as a filming location for Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation
(MBC) 2012 drama Moon Embracing the Sun as local markets, private residences of
commoners, and night scenes.

There are various exhibition halls that provide a broadened view of the folk
culture:

 * Nine world folk exhibition hall (860 cultural artefacts).
 * One earth ware exhibition hall (3,000 or so cultural artefacts).
 * One masked dance exhibition hall (30 cultural artefacts).

FOOD AND SHOPPING

Snack bars can be found in the food market, also known as Jumak, where visitors
can enjoy various types of Korean food. These include sweet ice-cream, Winibini
candy (also known as Weeny Beeny), Railroad hotdog and Imsil cheese pizza.

There are also a variety of traditional tea houses and play village restaurants
which visitors can experience. Such as the Herbal medicine shop, Traditional tea
house, Railroad and Minsok Banjeom, Eight folk village shops and Souvenir and
ateliers.

ATTRACTION

Several attraction sites of the village include bumper cars, Music express,
Biking, Family Costa, Boat ride, Bounce spin, and Sled slope in winter.


FESTIVAL


WELCOME TO JOSEON

The cultural theme park of Korean Folk Village hosts the “Welcome to Joseon”
Variety Festival each spring. An exotic program that is presented by distinctive
Joseon-period characters who appear in ancient fairy tales and stories. During
the festival, visitors are encouraged to directly engage with the cultural
performances, allowing them to travel back in time and experience a daily life
in the Joseon period.
