Important Notes Before Travelling
• The best time to visit Kyoto is in spring (March-May) or autumn (October-November) when the weather is mild and the scenery is beautiful with cherry blossoms or autumn leaves.
• The best way to get to Kyoto from Tokyo is by shinkansen (bullet train), which takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes. You can buy your ticket online in advance or at the station. You don’t need a JR Pass unless you plan to travel extensively around Japan.
• The best place to stay in Kyoto is in Gion, the traditional geisha district, where you can find many hotels, restaurants, shops, and attractions within walking distance. You can also easily access public transportation from here.
• The best way to get around Kyoto is by a combination of walking, cycling, bus, subway, and taxi. You can buy a one-day bus pass for JPY 600 or a one-day subway pass for JPY 900 at any station or convenience store. You can also rent a bicycle for JPY 1000 per day at various locations. Taxis are convenient but expensive, so use them sparingly.
